I start with an audit of your existing markup: what is present, what is missing, what is faulty? From that, I derive which schema types bring you the greatest benefit, and prioritize them with you. Schema markup is a standardized code with which you give your website’s content its meaning. Instead of a machine just seeing text, the markup lets it recognize, for example: this is a company, this a service, this an author, this a question with its answer. The vocabulary for it comes from Schema.org, a shared standard of the major search engines. Nothing visible changes for the reader, but search engines and AI systems can classify and reproduce your content more reliably as a result.

JSON-LD is the format recommended by search engines for embedding schema markup. The markup sits as a compact data block in the source code, separate from the visible content. This has clear advantages: it is clear, less error-prone, and can be maintained without touching the layout. Older methods like microdata, by contrast, mix the markup directly into the HTML text, which quickly becomes confusing. I therefore use JSON-LD throughout, because it is clean, easy to maintain, and explicitly preferred by Google.

Schema markup brings you two central advantages. First, your page can appear more appealingly in the search results, for example with rating stars, expandable FAQ, or breadcrumb navigation, which means more attention and clicks. Second, AI systems understand your content more unambiguously and can cite it more correctly. So schema is not an end in itself, but pays directly into visibility and trust. A highlighted presentation is never guaranteed, but without clean markup you give away these chances from the start.

That depends on your business, but some types almost always make sense. These include Organization or LocalBusiness for your company, Person for authors and contacts, Service for your services, FAQPage for question-answer sections, and BreadcrumbList for navigation. Depending on your offering, Product, Review or AggregateRating, or Article for blog posts are added. I do not choose as many types as possible, but exactly the ones that fit your content and bring real benefit. Markup used wrongly or unsuitably harms more than it helps.

Yes, absolutely. Google requires that questions and answers marked up with FAQPage also stand visibly on the page exactly like that. Hidden FAQ markup or markup only present in the code violates the guidelines and can lead to the markup being ignored or causing problems. I therefore always implement FAQ schema to match a real, visible FAQ section whose content agrees with the markup. This way you stay on the safe side and at the same time benefit from the better comprehensibility for search and AI.

Yes, which is why care is so important here. Faulty markup is, in the best case, simply ignored, but it can also lead to rich results not appearing. Markup that does not match the visible content or violates guidelines can even be rated as spam by Google and trigger a manual action. Contradictory or duplicate markup also causes confusion. That is exactly why I validate every piece of markup before going live and make sure the markup is correct and matches the page content exactly.

There are reliable tools for this that I use as standard. With Google’s Rich Results Test, you see whether a page qualifies for highlighted presentations. That is a good start, but often does not cover everything or produces faulty and duplicate markup. I therefore first check what your system already delivers, correct errors, and add specifically what is missing, without anything changing in the operation of your page. Whether with a plugin, in the template, or as standalone JSON-LD: I choose the path that is cleanest for your setup.

Often yes, because automatically generated markup is rarely optimal. Plugins usually deliver only standard markup, leave out important types, fill mandatory details incompletely, or generate several contradictory blocks on one page. This can lead to Google ignoring or misinterpreting the data. In the audit, I look closely at what is present, clear out errors and duplicates, and add what really counts for your goals. The result is clean, complete markup instead of an automatic minimum standard that gives away potential.

Schema is not a one-time thing, but also not a constant effort. Maintenance is needed above all when content changes, for example new services, different contact details, new FAQ, or a rebuilt page structure. Then the markup has to be updated so it continues to match the visible content. In addition, the Schema.org standards and the requirements of the search engines develop further, which is why occasional checks make sense. I document the markup so updates are easy, and check regularly on request whether everything stays valid.

No, and I say that openly: schema is the prerequisite for rich results, but not a guarantee. Whether Google actually delivers a highlighted presentation is decided by the algorithm based on many factors, for example relevance, quality, and trust. Schema markup is the part of your website visitors never see and machines read first. It translates what is on your page into a form that search engines and AI systems understand unambiguously. Sounds technical, but often decides whether you are recognized as a reliable source or drown in the noise.

Why a plugin usually is not enough

Many CMSs output schema automatically, and that is a good start. Only this markup is often generic, patchy, or does not describe what really makes up your business. A machine then gets data that is formally present but says nothing in terms of content. My standard is that the markup reflects your real services, your structure, and your connections, not just a standard template.

The difference: Whether schema is present, a plugin checks. Whether it says the right thing and is delivered error-free decides the effect. The second is handwork.

Faulty markup is worse than none at all

Structured data is a promise to the machine: this is how it is. If this promise is not true, for example because the markup does not match the visible content or is technically faulty, that harms more than it helps. I therefore always check both: whether the markup validates cleanly and whether it correctly reflects what is actually visible on the page.

Realistic: Schema markup does not guarantee extended search results. It creates the prerequisite for them and removes the hurdles that unnecessarily slow down many pages.

How schema and AI visibility relate

Search engines have used schema for their extended results for years. For AI systems, the clear markup is becoming even more valuable right now, because it helps to assign your brand correctly and not confuse it. Anyone who works cleanly here lays a foundation that pays for several channels at once. That is exactly why I always coordinate schema with the rest of your AI strategy.

How this could look in practice

A page is strong in content but presented inconspicuously in the search results. I look at the existing markup and find that it is generic and partly faulty. I mark up the real services, reviews, and questions cleanly and fix the errors. The goal: that search engines and AI understand the content unambiguously and present the page suitably.

When the close look pays off especially

The more diverse your offering and the more important the correct presentation in search and AI, the more clean schema brings. For simple, small pages, a lean solution is sometimes enough.
