- Since October 7 and 8, 2026, ChatGPT has been using GPT-6 for all users: GPT-6 Sol on the paid plans and GPT-6 Luna on the Free and Go plans.
- The big new feature is Intelligent UI: depending on the question, ChatGPT answers with charts, calculators, forms or maps instead of text alone.
- According to OpenAI, for questions that need web search, GPT-6 starts answering 44% sooner on average and finds supporting information more reliably.
- For businesses, it matters more than ever whether their website provides clear, verifiable information and whether ChatGPT can access it at all.
What happened? GPT-6 has arrived in ChatGPT
On October 7, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-6 for all ChatGPT users. Customers on the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans got the model immediately, and the Free and Go plans followed one day later. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT now reaches more than 1.2 billion people every week.
There are two variants behind the name. The paid plans use GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. According to OpenAI, both are tuned for everyday conversations in the chat. The models in Work and Codex, which are aimed at professional tasks and developers, remain unchanged.
For you as a business, the name matters less than what your customers notice. And this time, that is quite a lot: answers look different, and web search works differently.
Intelligent UI: answers become small tools
The most visible change is called Intelligent UI. For every question, ChatGPT decides whether an answer works best as text, as a graphic or as a small interactive tool. OpenAI’s examples include a retirement savings calculator, a bill splitter for a restaurant check, a timing plan for a Sunday roast and a road trip with stops on a map.
Technically, it is based on a library of ready-made components that ChatGPT assembles into an interface while it writes. To the user, it looks like a small app in the middle of the answer. Simple questions still get a simple text answer.
Intelligent UI is the new way ChatGPT presents answers. Instead of writing text only, ChatGPT builds suitable elements right into the answer: charts, buttons, forms, calculators or maps. The model decides which format appears, depending on what the question calls for.
What does this mean for businesses? My assessment: the more ChatGPT handles directly in the answer, the less often a user needs to open a website for it. Anyone who used to visit a website for a simple cost calculator or a comparison table may now get something similar right in the chat. It is the same development I see at Google with AI Overviews and Google’s AI Mode: the first orientation happens on the platform, and the click comes later or not at all.
Your website does not lose importance because of this, but its role changes. It is less often the first thing a prospect sees and more often the source the AI uses to build its answer. And it remains the place where the final decision is made. In my experience, people who click through at that point have usually done their research and are further along in their decision.
Faster and more targeted: what changes in web search
For the visibility of businesses, a second point is at least as important. When ChatGPT searches the web for an answer, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than its predecessor, according to OpenAI. This is possible because the model can already answer while it is still thinking.
More interesting than the speed is another statement from OpenAI: GPT-6 makes better decisions about when and what to search for, finds supporting information more reliably and more often addresses the key point of difficult questions. These are OpenAI’s internal measurements, not independent tests. Still, the direction is clear.
My assessment from practice: a model that searches more deliberately for evidence rewards content that actually provides evidence. Generic marketing lines such as “We are your competent partner” give an AI nothing to base a recommendation on. Concrete information does: which services you provide for whom, in which area, with what experience and on what terms. This kind of clarity is at the core of Generative Engine Optimization.
The following overview summarizes what changes with GPT-6 and how I assess the consequences for businesses:
| Area | What changes | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Charts, calculators, forms and maps right in the answer | More questions get answered in the chat, simple clicks become rarer |
| Web search | Faster answers, more targeted search for evidence | Concrete, verifiable content has better chances than marketing speak |
| Models | GPT-6 Sol on the paid plans, GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go | Your customers use GPT-6, whichever plan they are on |
| Advertising | Not mentioned in the announcement, ads stay separate from the answer | The recommendation in the answer still cannot be bought |
Facts according to OpenAI, as of October 2026. The right-hand column is my assessment from practice.
A new model is like a new member of staff at a library’s information desk. They work faster and search more thoroughly. But they can only recommend books that are on the shelf and whose content they understand. Whether your business is on that shelf is not decided by the model but by what can be found about you online.
Opening your website to ChatGPT: three technical points
Even the most thorough search is of no use to you if ChatGPT is not allowed to read your site. OpenAI describes three points itself in its guidance for website owners. I check them for every business I work with on AI visibility.
1. The search crawler must not be blocked. For search in ChatGPT, OpenAI uses its own crawler called OAI-SearchBot. According to OpenAI, any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. For your content to show up in summaries and snippets, however, this crawler must not be blocked. A blanket block of all bots in your robots.txt may shut you out exactly here.
2. Training and search are two different things. A second crawler, GPTBot, collects content for training future models. If you do not want that, you can block GPTBot specifically without blocking search. Which rule makes sense for which AI crawler should be a deliberate decision, not an accident.
3. Pages that should not appear need a noindex. OpenAI points out that a blocked page can still show up with its link and title if its address is known from elsewhere. You can reliably exclude it with a noindex tag. However, the crawler can only read that tag if it is allowed to access the page.
On top of that come the basics that apply to any kind of search: structured data that tells machines clearly who you are and what you offer, and a fast, cleanly built website. You can see how fast and cleanly built a website can be on my own site:
ctseo.de scores 100 % on Google
Speed is not a nice-to-have. Google treats loading time and Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor, and fast sites keep visitors and win more enquiries. What I deliver for my clients you can see right on this page, measured officially with Google PageSpeed Insights. Even AI agents read and use this page flawlessly, a direct advantage for your visibility in AI systems.

How to tell whether ChatGPT sends you visitors
For everyone who wants to see numbers, there is good news: ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links that users click from search results. OpenAI confirms this in its guidance for website owners. This means ChatGPT appears as a separate source in your web analytics, whether you use Google Analytics or a privacy-friendly tool. I explain how to measure visitors reliably without a cookie banner in my article on cookieless tracking.
A UTM parameter is an addition at the end of a web address that tells your analytics where a visitor came from. ChatGPT automatically adds the value chatgpt.com to links in its answers. This lets you separate visits from ChatGPT cleanly from other sources.
This number has a limit, though. It only shows the people who actually click. Anyone who reads your name in ChatGPT and later calls you directly or types in your address does not show up there. With Intelligent UI answering more questions directly in the chat, this invisible share is more likely to grow than to shrink. Only your own measurement can show whether and how you are mentioned in the answers themselves. I explain how that works in my article on how to measure AI visibility.
What has not changed with GPT-6
For all the novelty, some things stay as they were. That is part of an honest assessment, too.
Ads remain separate from the answer. Since late August, ChatGPT has been showing ads in 31 European countries, including Germany, to adult users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI stresses that ads do not influence the answers. Advertising plays no role in the GPT-6 announcement. I have summarized what the new ad channel means for your planning in my article on ChatGPT ads.
Good content does not lose its value overnight. A new model does not mean you have to start from scratch. When ChatGPT searches the web, it reads the content that is there today. In my assessment, anyone with clear, well-supported content and a good reputation on other websites is more likely to benefit from a more thorough search than to lose out.
The picture the AI has of you is still built from many sources. Your website is one of them. Then there are your Google Business Profile, reviews, directories and mentions on other sites. I describe how to steer this picture deliberately in my article on AI reputation.
What you should do now
There is no need to panic because of GPT-6. But the switch is a good reason for a short review. You should be able to answer these four questions:
1. What does ChatGPT answer today when your customers ask their questions? Ask three to five typical questions without mentioning your company name, for example “Which tax advisor in my city specializes in medical practices?”. Are you mentioned? And if not, who is mentioned instead?
2. Is ChatGPT allowed to read your site? A look at your robots.txt shows whether OAI-SearchBot is blocked. It only takes a few minutes.
3. Does your website deliver facts or just promises? Read your service pages through the eyes of a machine. Do they state clearly what you offer, for whom, where and with what experience? Or mostly adjectives?
4. Do you see visits from ChatGPT in your analytics? If so, which pages are visited? That shows you what ChatGPT already uses you as a source for.
These four points give you a first impression. A reliable picture only emerges when you check many questions across several AI systems, find the causes of gaps and derive a sensible order of priorities from them. That is exactly what I do in the free AI visibility check: you see where you stand and learn which two or three levers will make the biggest difference for you.
Conclusion: new model, same ground rule
GPT-6 makes ChatGPT faster, more thorough in its search and much more visual. For your customers, this means they get more answers directly in the chat. For you as a business, it means that whether you appear in these answers is increasingly decided before anyone visits your website.
The ground rule remains the same as before the update: an AI recommends what it finds, understands and considers credible. If you make sure that applies to your business, you are just as well prepared for GPT-6 as for any model that comes after it. If you would like to know how ChatGPT sees your business today, I am happy to take a look with you, free of charge.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. According to its announcement, OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 globally in the chat area of ChatGPT. Users in Europe work with GPT-6 Sol or GPT-6 Luna, depending on their plan. Some other ChatGPT features launch later in Europe, but that does not affect the model itself.
No. A new model is no reason for a rebuild. A review makes sense, though: can ChatGPT access your site, does it provide clear and verifiable information, and are you mentioned for your customers’ most important questions? The answers show whether small adjustments are enough or whether the problem lies elsewhere.
OpenAI uses its own crawler for search and notes in its guidance for website owners that addresses can also come from third-party search providers. Good visibility in classic search engines is therefore a solid foundation. It does not guarantee a mention in ChatGPT, though.
Among its examples, OpenAI mentions a road trip with stops on a map. Separately, ChatGPT already offers its own shopping features with product listings. OpenAI has not yet described in detail how prominently individual businesses will appear in the interactive answers.
According to OpenAI, content from web search should appear in answers with a source reference and a link. How prominently the source is shown depends on the answer. Worth knowing: even a mention without a click shapes your prospect’s decision.
OpenAI does not give fixed timeframes. In answers that use web search, new content can appear relatively quickly once the crawler has picked up the page. The knowledge a model brings from its training, on the other hand, only changes with later model versions.
No. GPT-6 is an OpenAI model and works in ChatGPT. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode run on Google’s Gemini models. The foundations of good visibility are very similar, though, so good work on your own website pays off in both systems.
Generic calculators lose value because ChatGPT can create them on demand. A calculator with your real prices, your services and your service area, however, remains something only you can offer. That kind of content is interesting for prospects and for AI systems alike.
If you win customers locally, pay particular attention to consistent information: name, address, services and opening hours should match on your website, your Google Business Profile and in directories. The more deliberately a model searches for evidence, the more contradictions between these sources weigh.
OpenAI states that GPT-6 is better at naming the limits of its own capabilities and more often addresses the key point of difficult questions. Mistakes still happen. That is why you should regularly check what ChatGPT says about your business, so that incorrect information does not spread unnoticed.
